Error 2002 (HY000) Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Hi  everyone,

          I have installed mySQL server 5.0.27 from the ports directory.
Everytime I connect to it using
"mysql -h localhost -u rajen -p" I get the above error. I have no idea
as to how I can resolve this
problem. I have tried telneting localhost and it says that the
connection is refused. Please suggest
how I can get around this, Thanks.
