considering how much it breaks linux-* ports. Is there any intention
to do so?

To be clear, neither beahavior is entirely correct, but the issue that
commit was trying to fix (using debootstrapped installatons without
chrooting into them) is quite a bit more niche and more easily
workaroundable.
