I am closing this bug as not-a-bug. As jbeich explained, GNOME under Wayland
has never been supported on FreeBSD -- DRM is required for Wayland compositors,
and VMware lacks vmwgfx.ko in drm-kmod. This is a known platform limitation
documented in bugs #249882 and #258042, not a fixable port issue.
