I don't know well freebsd, nut I know that on linux, many strange sound issue comes from hardware issues, misconfigured kernels or the video card acting like it is the only device in the system. This video card priority issue can be fixed by setting higher IRQ priorities for the sound cards than for the other hardware devices. I don't know if or how this is possible to setup in freebsd.
