All you need is a kernel that doesn't use the PBVM. That should
be an 8-stable kernel IIRC. The loader is fine.

ispfw is on the ISO. That should do the trick.

Ok.

You should be able to. As an experiment, try to boot verbose
(this prints a lot more stuff and may impact timing) or boot
with -a. -a tells the kernel to ask for the root mount and
can also introduce a "breather". At the rootmount prompt,
type "dot" with enter to have the kernel work for a second.
Do this until you have /dev/cd0.

The loader may be trying to read /etc/fstab at that point, but it's
ok if that fails. So yes this should be a good point.

Anyway: I was hoping noone would be bitten by it and it was just on
my particular machine. This is getting too visible for me to put off.
