The manual pages are much more up-to-date than the old document which
you're using. I don't think that Helmut Michaelis has touched that in
years.

The official way is much simpler:
cd /usr/src
KERNCONF=your_kern_conf make buildkernel

You can set KERNCONF in /etc/make.conf or /etc/src.conf (7-CURRENT only).
