You will be never able to boot xp from USB. 
At least I was not. 

FreeBSD will boot without a complain.

Same goes for ME and USB support as far as backup drive is concern.

Not even Symantec ghost 9 is able to boot any of the M$ft OS's.
Probably because Msft owns the USB driver spec.
