I bet it doesn't like DVD-R's.  Did you try a DVD+R or
DVD+RW?  

Here's the command I use:

growisofs -speed=4 -dvd-compat -Z /dev/cd0=nameof.iso

You are correct. +R works. I find that outcome to be
somewhat bizarre.
