I have an X700 PCI-e in a desktop PC.  I put a ChipID entry in xorg.conf
to get mine to work.  It looks like:

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "ati"
        VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
        BoardName   "Unknown Board"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
        ChipID       0x4a49
