Just to make sure: hw.acpi.lid_switch_state was set to S3, right?

This is a known problem.

If you close the lid, or if you use acpiconf -s 3?

Do you have dpms enabled? If you do, you could add
"xset dpms force off" to /etc/rc.suspend.
