Note that ifconfig ath0 scan will _initiate_ a scan.  To view the 
current results in the cache use

ifconfig ath0 list scan

Beware the cache contents are timed out and the current system does not 
do background scanning so if the cache is empty you'll need to manually 
force a scan to be done.  But doing this will disassociate the station 
from the ap until after the scan is completed.
