pcmcia modem (ed1)

i've got a non winmodem pcmcia card for my dell latitude cpx. when i run dmesg i can see the following entry:

ed1: Total wildcard entry ignored for SVEC PN650TX 10/100 Dual Speed Fast Ethernet PC Card

but ifconfig doesn't show me a new device. is that normal? what do i have to do to use that modem?
