I can now confirm that I see the same behavior for any card. The CIS
is simply not readable.

On the other hand, the rest of the system seems operational with gnome
running. So I can now do everything I need to do using sneaker-net
(CD-RW) to move files.

Now the fun begins with my ports and gcc-3.2. :-)
