Thanks to David Wolfskill, who suggested detaching the ide channel and
then suspending and undocking/docking while suspended. This seems to
work with one caveat.

If I boot undocked, suspend and then dock the machine hard
resets. However, if I boot undocked, detach the ide channel (which I'm
now doing in an /usr/local/etc/rc.d script), then suspend and dock it
seems to work ok.
