As requested, I cvsupped to the head, and tried again. I can report that 
with ACPI disabled, APM works fine (no hibernate to disk as yet), but X 
still doesn't want to play.  I confess I dunno what I'm doing here, and 
I'm not on the list, so don't forget to copy me. Anyway, help would be

This is a retrograde step, coz at least on the release version of 5.0 it 
vaguely understood that there was an ATI chipset, now it's lost sight of 
it completely.
