I'me using a Sitecom usb to serial adaptor, which is supported by the
uplcom, ucom drives. I have been using it on 4.7 before i upgrade to 5.0
current at the moment. It runs nicely. I think there are some other
no-name brands like this who sell them. But just have a look in the
local shop and ask them if you may try one ot two. just load the modules 
ucom.ko and uplcom.ko and look if you see some things happening like

This is from 5.0 current but more or less similar messages should pop
