As I recalled, it didn't work.  I ran /etc/weekly.local from cron last 
night (after having bracketed it with "apm -e false" and "apm -e true").  
As soon as the network activity ceased, the machine slowed to a crawl 
until I logged in this morning.

As soon as everything finishes, I'll take FreeBSD down and explore the 
BIOS configuration, per your suggestion.  Are there any particular parts 
of the ThinkPad BIOS I should pay particular attention to?
