RE: IBM T30 and thermal problems

IBM admits that several T30 systems built before or ~10/02 have a bad
system board that has a bad DIMM slot.
This may not be your problem, but others may also benefit from it??

 Some ThinkPad T30 systems (MTM 2366/2367) may not recognize the memory

 installed in the front (closest to the user) memory DIMM connector. The

 BIOS Setup screen (pressing F1 after a cold boot) and the Windows
System   
 Information/Device Manager programs do not display as much memory as is

 installed. For example, the system has 2, 256MB DIMMs installed for a

 total of 512MB of system memory, but the BIOS Setup reports that the

 system only has 256MB of total memory.

 

 

 Affected configurations

 Any T30 with the front memory DIMM connector populated. If the system
has  
 only one memory DIMM installed, the manufacturing default is that the
back 
 memory DIMM connector is the one that is populated.

 

 

 Solution

 Either replace the system motherboard or have the system sent in to EZ

 Serve.

 

 

 Additional information

 To verify that the error is in the system board, not in the memory
DIMM,   
 perform the following steps

    1. First, ensure that the memory DIMM itself is not bad by testing
it   
       in the back memory DIMM slot. If the memory is not recognized in

       either slot, replace the memory DIMM.

    2. Next, test known working memory in the front DIMM slot. If the

       system does not recognize the known good memory in the front DIMM

       slot, either replace the system board or have the system sent to
EZ  
       Serve.

Yesterday afternoon I got several coredumps with sig 4 and sig 10 during
a kernel build, at different stages of compilation. This morning,
everything compiled through neatly.

I got my T30 1.8GHz last autumn, so it never really experienced hot days
until now. The last memcheck (memtest86) run was several months ago, and
it didn't reveal any problems. But then, this check doesn't seem too
reliable to me, it didn't detect a dimm as bad that definitely was
broken.

So my questions: did anyone experience heat problems with a T30? And
what can I do to pinpoint the problem?
