hello per,

you might want to double check something before writing off that
winmodem.

/usr/ports/comms/ltmdm

it doesn't support every variety of winmodem, but it does for several
of the lucent flavours -- like mine.   ;)

perhaps you'll get lucky 'and' save a few dollars.  regretfully, i cannot
advise you regarding the other points.
