After I put 'device ehci' in my kernal. my laptop-to-LaCie throughput was
pretty good:

  # dd if=/dev/zero of=/new/junk bs=4k count=125000
  125000+0 records in
  125000+0 records out
  512000000 bytes transferred in 58.722096 secs (8719035 bytes/sec)
