I just let my X23 know how to hibernate under FreeBSD a couple weeks
ago. It's quite simple:

1. Read this url first:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/manager.wss?rs=0&rt=0&org=psg&doc=PFAN-3VXSNV

2. Fetch a bootable floppy image from this url:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/manager.wss?rs=0&rt=0&org=psg&doc=MIGR-4PESMK

3. Be sure to have a partition large enough for hibernation. In your
case, the FAT16 should do. Just delete it.

4. Boot the floppy made from step 2. Follow instructions on the
screen, and make a hibernation partition.

5. Enjoy your Fn+F12. :)

BTW, after resuming from hibernation, your X will forget how to draw.
Switch to any tty then go back to X will fix it.
