USB card readers

I have a USB card reader that does not work well under FreeBSD 5.3. It mounts the MSDOS card OK, but attempts to read content results in a freeze of the ls command. I have confirmed that the USB cardreader works with this laptop by using XP and copying files from the card. Can you recommend a cardreader that works with 5.3?
