Make sure all your ports are up-to-date.  In particular, freetype2, Xft,
and fontconfig must be current.  Make sure you do _not_ have the
mozilla-fonts port installed.  I recommend installing x11-fonts/webfonts
to get a nice set of TrueType fonts.  Make sure you have the XFree86
scalable font port installed.  That is:

XFree86-fontScalable-4.2.0

Here's what I have, and I'm generally happy with Mozilla's anti-aliasing
functionality:
