Hi FreeBSD team,
Context: I've been building a full desktop environment on FreeBSD 15.1-RELE=
ASE
on an ASUS VivoBook Pro 15 (X580VD) - XLibre as the X server, oxwm as windo=
w
manager, NVIDIA Optimus (Intel HD 630 primary + GTX 1050 Mobile via PRIME
offload), and PipeWire/WirePlumber for audio. Everything else in the stack =
is
now working correctly (video acceleration, graphics offload, notifications,
automount, etc.), but I've hit a wall specifically with headphone/speaker
switching on this Conexant codec, and I'd like some guidance on the hdaa(4)
side before I give up on it being solvable in software.
What I was trying to do: get the internal speakers to automatically mute wh=
en
headphones are plugged in (and unmute again when they're unplugged), which =
is
standard behavior on this laptop under Windows/Linux.
What I did: I found and applied a pin-config hint approach that (per an old=
er,
previously "working" note I had from a prior FreeBSD 15.0 install on the sa=
me
machine) reassigns the headphone pin to be the primary association and
disables the speaker pin's association. In /boot/loader.conf:

The error / actual problem: both the internal speakers and the headphone ja=
ck
play audio *simultaneously*, at full volume, regardless of jack insertion
state =97 the hint above has no audible effect on the speaker output at all=
.
Looking closer at the sysctl output, I think I understand why: nid22 and ni=
d29
are both wired to the same DAC (nid=3D16). Even though nid29 is tagged
[DISABLED] in its association, its "Pin control" is still 0x00000040 (OUT) =
and
EAPD is still enabled (0x00000002). My interpretation is that [DISABLED] he=
re
only affects which pin the driver's own auto-select/association logic
prefers - it doesn't actually gate power or output to the deprioritized pin=
.
Since both pins share the same DAC, both keep receiving the exact same sign=
al
in parallel no matter what the association hint says.
Other things I tried, both unsuccessful:
1. OSS mixer mute:

This toggles the mute flag and it's reflected back in `mixer` output, bu=

has zero audible effect - speakers keep playing at full volume regardles=

of the mute state. I suspect this "speaker" control might be tied to
something other than the actual DAC playback path (maybe a legacy PC
speaker beep passthrough?), rather than the real analog output.
2. Userspace port switching: I'm running PipeWire + WirePlumber with the
audio/pipewire-spa-oss port (providing the freebsd-oss SPA backend, whic=
h
is required - the stock pipewire package has no OSS support at all and
only ever shows a "Dummy Output" without it). Once that's installed,
PipeWire correctly enumerates the codec ("Conexant (0x1fd6) (Analog)",
api.freebsd-oss.dsp-path =3D /dev/dsp0). However, `pactl list sinks` sho=
ws no
"Ports:" section at all for this sink - the freebsd-oss backend apparent=
ly
exposes one fixed sink per pcm device with no port abstraction (unlike
ALSA/ACP on Linux, which would expose analog-output-speaker vs.
analog-output-headphones as switchable ports on the same device). So
there's nothing to switch at that layer either.
Question: is there an actual hdaa(4)/hdac(4)-level mechanism to properly
power down or hard-mute a specific pin - a GPIO toggle, an EAPD control I'm
missing on the correct nid, unsolicited-event-driven jack-sense handling th=
at
needs to be triggered some other way - given that both pins report "PDC"
(Presence Detect Capable) in their pin caps? Or is this simply a known
limitation of how this particular Conexant codec wires its outputs (shared
DAC, no real per-pin power gating exposed to the driver), meaning
software-level auto-mute just isn't achievable here under FreeBSD as things
stand today?
