It is probably not clear in my original description that this is about a bridge
setup where the addresses are "correctly" assigned. I am trying to get
everything running with this "correct" setup, but am running into the issues
described.

Up till now I was using the "incorrect" setup, where the IP addresses stayed
with em0. This was working surprisingly well, except for IPv6 ndp needing some
prodding.

But the "correct" setup, which I am trying to configure, results in
connectivity problems under high load. This is the main issue.

A side issue is that VirtualBox cannot attach to the bridge, but must be
attached to em0 instead, which is a bridge member.

Another unrelated issue are the additional difficulties I encounter with the
native em0 driver as opposed to net/intel-em-kmod.

Where in the manual pages does it say that a bridge must be set up in advance
and must then not be changed during its lifetime?
