applied the patch. production backup router in the CARP pair has been up for
two hours now -- usually the kernel panic would strike within about 50 minutes
from reboot.

rebooted the primary router, now both routers are running the patched kernel.

I suppose we can call this bug "fixed" if neither router kernel panic reboots
for the rest of the day. looks promising so far.
