Sure I can remain the maintainer for the time being. I just don't know what
exactly that means since I am rather new to FreeBSD, and I was afraid that it
might delay things if I react slowly, and I don't think I will find the time to
properly test the port before October.

That would be cool! There already is bug #290820 to port mautrix-signal.
