I just tried Adium on macOS and that seems to be having trouble so I’ll try on linux next. I unplugged the Apple Cinema Display USB hub and the apple keyboard from the front and plugged a Sun USB keyboard into the rear and it worked! Not sure which of those caused the USB trouble. I’ll experiment later. But this is great!
