PPC or PPC64 on imac g5

Trying to install curses based software via ports. On the 32 bit OS, have been able to compile word grinder and a Reddit app. Not much luck with elinks, ncdu, ledger or midnight commander. I'll jump to 64 bit if that helps. Any suggestions out there? Is most of the development on 64 now-a-days?
