Hmm. altivec does define vec_step as well, the AltiVec
Technology Programming Interface Manual :

lists:

QUOTE
2.5.3 Value for Adjusting Pointers
At compile time, the vec_step(vec_data) produces the integer value representing
the amount by which a pointer to a component of an AltiVec data should
increment to cause a pointer increment to increment by 16 bytes. For example, a
vector unsigned short data type is considered to contain eight unsigned 2-byte
values. A pointer to unsigned 2-byte values used to stream through an array of
unsigned 2-byte values by a full vector at a time should increment by
vec_step(vector unsigned short) = 8. Table 2-3 provides a summary of the values
by data type.
