Were the POWER experts that indicated the above notified of the
1999:

that does define vec_step in "2.5.3 Value for Adjusting Pointers"?
(Quoted in comment #13.) At least knowing of it might prompt
noticing the type of problem quicker in the future.

(I have no idea which POWER experts reported the above quote.)

(I'd blaim the document in ALTIVECPIM.pdf as what started this mess
by not following langauge naming rules. Then other things that
should likely have been done were not done to work around the issue.
OpenCL later also having defined vec_step in a similar manor did not
help.)
