I've played a bit more with this: turns out that "ATA controllers" block has nothing to do with it, but when I disable scbus and depending stuff, it gets past the "IPsec: Initialized Security Association Processing." message and trying to mount root off CD (which fails for obvious reasons). Disabling "device cd" alone is not enough, FWIW.
