Making devel/libpthread-stubs is no help, it seems to only create pthread-stubs.pc. Seems like I___m missing something fundamental but I___m lost as to what it is. Any ideas?

This is intentional, the library should not needed any more. Can you
verify that your ports tree is up to date? I can't reproduce the error
when building libXext.
What does config.log say?
