The move to xorgproto was announced by the standard way of announcing such things, by entries in UPDATING as well as entries in MOVED to have tools find it. If you are using binary packages then this caused no issues, since the dependency solver in pkg would solve this issue and delete the old packages before installing xorgproto. When you are building from the ports tree you need to read and understand UPDATING to do so successfully.
