IIRC, xf86-video-scfb and xf86-video-vesa use software rendering by default:
llvmpipe from mesa-dri. Recent mesa-dri 18.1.9 -> 18.3.2 could regress
llvmpipe. Try rolling back to 18.2.8, then 18.1.9.
