membership of the video group(†), then why, according to the package messages,
is membership of the video group required?

†   I do find, at least, radeonkms working _without_ membership of the group 
    for drm-current-kmod on FreeBSD-CURRENT on an HP EliteBook 8570p with 
    AMD Thames [Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M].
