The early Intel GPU generations (at least up to the third generation, as yours)
run fine in user mode. They do not need KMS at all.
Your case again confirms my assumption. Thank you for that!
So you did the exactly right thing by disabling KMS by removing/renaming the
offending drivers.

May I ask you for a favor?
Could you please check by entering 
# sysctl hw.acpi.supported_sleep_state
whether your system supports S3 suspend state? (e.g. sleep)

If it does, then please try out using the "zzz" command both from console and
from xorg, with the SC console enabled and without (!) KMS driver loaded.

I ask because I would be curious to know whether my assumption is true that
suspend/resume will work fine with (and _only_ with) this configuration.
