I spoke too soon. Updating mesa didn't do anything.

Additionally, an easier way to hang the graphics is to run a more
graphically-intensive screensaver from xscreensaver for a "prolonged" period.

One of my incident machines does not use ZFS.

Going to see if base b51927b7b018d268c91b2127d82786caf68254de from bug 261707
makes a difference.
