Base b51927b7b018d268c91b2127d82786caf68254de eliminated the artefacts and
instability from such, but the aforementioned xscreensaver bit remains. Unlike
the artefacts, which I could run shutdown(8) from an ssh connection or the
power button, recovering from the xscreensaver graphics hang requires a hard
machine reset since the shutdown process never completes. Not sure if this is a
separate issue, however.
