Reading the package message in isolation (without the context of this bug
report, without the abuse elsewhere), I see: 

1. nvidia first, the primary recommendation

2. nvidia-modeset as an alternative _only if_ either 

   a) the NULL message is observed; or 

   b) starting X11 server results in a hang.
