Please ignore my remarks regarding unprivileged user, startx, home directory 
and access of root's files.  That all was due to an unrelated problem.  Shame 
on me ...

Leaves me with slim's black screen and /var/log/slim.log as Martin MATO 
in comment #4 described, although I get:

slim: waiting for X server to shut down

When reverting to a slightly older boot environment with libxcb-1.15_2 
still installed, slim works as expected.
