Over one year later, I want to add a bit of information:

Completely forgetting about this issue, I upgraded the said laptop to 13.2 from
its 12.4 install.
Lo and behold, X came up just fine after the upgrade.
Looking closer, I saw a:
radeon_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/R520_cp.bin"
message at boot. The machine was working fine but this was bothering me.
I found out that the /boot/modules/radeon_R520_cp_bin.ko file still was the old
one from the 12.4 install, so no wonder it wouldn't load.

I reinstalled it properly so that it loaded OK in the kernel and...  the
problem came back. X starts, shows an empty screen with a pointer and nothing
more happens. 

Conclusion: the problem lies in the Radeon R520 firmware.
Somehow it works fine without loading the firmware at boot.
