I recompiled 
- x11/nvidia-kmod
- x11/nvidia-driver
- graphics/nvidia-drm-kmod 

Same result, X11 server starts but then hangs with 100% of one CPU. nvidia-smi
also hangs with 100% CPU.

15-stable, ports tree at 6b50d3885e31662c439e89f43c74617100ce0bd0 (main).
