I don't get it how depending on x11/nvidia-kmod instead of x11/nvidia-driver
would pull in the latter.

Right now the driver package gets pulled in by

RUN_DEPENDS+= 
nvidia-driver${PKGNAMESUFFIX}>0:x11/nvidia-driver${PKGNAMESUFFIX}

which I propose to switch to nvidia-kmod instead.
