You did rebuild and reinstall drm / kms / intel drivers from ports on
the new kernel and kernel sources right?

"14.4 kernel with the exact same 14.3 world" may be the cause here,
drm/kernel might have changed a bit in the meantime, this is a known
issue. Always good to reinstall packages after upgrade even between
minor releases, especially the drm stuff (and other ports provided
drivers), it caused boot -> kernel panic loops after upgrade not that
long ago, now it may not crash but cause strange behavior even if it
loads :-P
