compressed FS does not extract during boot

Hi list! I have been using FreeSBIE from the ports collection on FreeBSD 5.4-Release for a week now and quite like it! unfortunately something got messed up some days ago and the configuration that had been working for me doesn't work any more. During boot-up the compressed fs does not get mounted (ufs.uzip) and so the boot process stops. Does the kernel have to have extra support for that or anything?
