How to test an iso without bruning it on a cdrom

I'm looking for a way to boot an iso without burning
it on a cdrom/dvd.

Does any one have a working idea ?

- via virtualisation ? 
maybe a feature of a vmware tool or equivalent

or 

- via an external disk ? 
maybe simulate a cdrom with an usb disk 

or

- via a specific boot loader ?
I've read that knoppix have a specific grub parameter
"bootfrom".
