E' ancora una volta mio grande onore e soddisfazione annunciare la
disponibilita' della FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE. Costruita sul successo di
FreeBSD 5.1, questa release include:

 - Completo supporto Tier-1 per sistemi mono processore e multiprocessori AMD
   Athlon64 e Opteron.
 - Partizione root linkata dinamicamente per una minima installazione e una
   migliore integrazione con il sotto-sistema Name Service Switch.
 - Un nuovo e ben piu' efficiente supporto driver per dispositivi IDE, SATA e
   802.11a/b/g e una migliore integrazione con il sotto-sistema di gestione
   dell'energia ACPI.
 - Supporto a livello client per la versione 4 del protocollo NFS
   (Network File System)
 - Supporto sperimentale di primo-stadio per capacita' di filtraggio e di
   inoltro multi threaded del traffico IP. Inoltre tutto cio' fornisce la base
   per una completa implementazione di uno stack di rete multi-threaded nella
   prossima release di FreeBSD.
 - Supporto per le ultime versioni di ambienti desktop come Gnome 2.4 e KDE 3.1.

Inoltre FreeBSD 5.2 contiene numerosi e significativi miglioramenti per quanto
concerne stabilita' e prestazioni rispetto a FreeBSD 5.1. Tuttavia, e' ancora
da considerare una release contenente "nuove tecnologie" e potrebbe non essere
adeguata a tutti gli utenti. Gli utenti con necessita' piu' conservative
potrebbero preferire di continuare ad utilizzare FreeBSD 4.X. Informazioni sui
vari compromessi coinvolti, come pure alcune note sui piani futuri sia di
FreeBSD 4.X che di 5.X, possono essere trovate nel documento

Disponibilita'

FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE supporta le architetture i386, pc98, alpha, sparc64,
amd64, e ia64 e puo' essere installata direttamente via rete usando un media
boot-abile oppure puo' essere copiata da un server locale NFS/FTP. Le

It is once again my great privilege and pleasure to announce the
availability of FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE.  Building upon the success of
FreeBSD 5.1, this release includes:

 - Full Tier-1 support for single and multiprocessor AMD Athlon64 and
   Opteron systems.
 - Dynamically linked root partition for a smaller installation footprint
   and better integration with the Name Service Switch subsystem.
 - New and improved driver support for IDE, SATA, and 802.11a/b/g devices,
   and significantly better integration with the ACPI power management
   subsystem.
 - Client support for the Network File System version 4 protocol.
 - Experimental first-stage support for multithreaded filtering and
   forwarding of IP traffic.  This also provides the foundation for a
   fully multi-threaded network stack in the next release of FreeBSD.
 - In-box support for the latest Gnome 2.4 and KDE 3.1 desktops.

FreeBSD 5.2 also contains a number of significant stability and performance
improvements over FreeBSD 5.1.  However, it is still considered a 'New
Technology' release and might not be suitable for all users.  Those with
more conservative needs may prefer to continue using FreeBSD 4.X.

bootable media or copied to a local NFS/FTP server.  Distributions for
