Imho default upgrade installations are good.
I would only add to them: Backup all important config files
beforehand (Kernel Config, /etc/passwd, httpd.conf, etc.) if you do
anything wrong (like pressing the wrong key in mergemaster) it is so
much more comfortable to have backups.
