And it would impossible to run FreeBSD for 32 bit platforms such as MIPS32
or i386-based virtual machine guests that use noticeable less memory than amd64.

FreeBSD has appliances other than desktops.

They are still in use, for telco hardware etc. They are also perfectly safe while running over IPSEC
or isolated vlans.
